iTunes U reaches 1 billion downloads

The popularity of online education catalog from Apple, iTunes U, has tripled over the past three years and the number of downloads is a clear indication of this.
Apple announced on Thursday that they were downloaded over 1 billion items from the catalog, an increase of 300 000 that was the figure in August 2010.
Service was launched in mid 2007 and since last year has a dedicated application.
iTunes U allows teachers to upload and distribute educational materials - in video format, audio and PDF files in private only for their students, or for all the public, free of charge.
They can create and or through their desktop computer or through their iPad.
As for the podcast's, users can download and subscribe to and material in order to receive the latest updates. According to Apple, there are over 1200 universities - including the most popular ones like Yale, MIT and Oxford - and 1200 pre-university schools (high schools or elementary) that have created more than 2,500 public courses.
Most interesting is the international growth of the service: iTunes U is available in 30 countries, making 60% of the emissions generated from outside the United States.
